I received a review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion. This is one more intense thriller. It starts out as a normal, easy police procedural, and then it shifts into high gear and doesn't let go until the final page! I can't stress enough the intensity of the emotional roller coaster this story invokes. It is one of those books that, once you get started on it, there's no way you will willingly put it down. I was up way too late reading when I should have been in bed. This book shows Scott Baker, our main character in a terrific light. Not only is he a great detective, but the story proves that he is a good man. He has the loyalty and commitment of not just his team, but of the higher-ups and the rank and file. That's not easy to do even for a fictional detective. Once again Scott's team worked like a well-oiled machine, even with their leader not functioning at peak capacity. All the investigative details felt exactly right. These characters are beginning to feel like people I know after reading several books from this series. They are realistic and not over-blown. You won't find any superheroes here and that's a good thing. The dialogue is natural sounding, even with British terminology thrown in. (I will admit to having to use my Kindle dictionary a couple of times.) There is enough detail in the plot, setting, actions, and "inner voice" to make for a smooth, full story without overloading the reader with extraneous details that only bog down the flow. I highly recommend this series and I can't wait to see what's next.
