You fall asleep in the playground. Your son is gone. 10 years later, will you finally get the truth? Ten years ago, the disappearance of firearms police officer Jonah Colley's young son almost destroyed him. A plea for help from an old friend leads Jonah to Slaughter Quay, and the discovery of four bodies. Attacked and left for dead, he is the only survivor. Under suspicion himself, he uncovers a network of secrets and lies about the people he thought he knew - forcing him to question what really happened all those years ago... It is the mystery element within this novel which creates and maintains its considerable appeal. That said, much of the middle of the book is quite flat or slow, although late twists and turns do make up for it somewhat. While I aligned with our likeable protagonist for the whole of the journey, the author does gift him with some of the worst luck possible, together with some of the poorest decision-making skills imaginable. For instance, he falls asleep at a playground while with his young son, who is later kidnapped there, despite identifying a suspicious man nearby. He also tells all to a reporter, naively believing she is a counsellor. The reader's keenness to have it all explained did keep me going to the finish line though. 7/10
