This novel is truly historical fiction as the author writes the following,".. six days after Lee had surrendered to Sherman...". The fact is Lee surrendered to Grant, Joe Johnson surrendered to Sherman (Callahan must have missed this day in 5th grade history class)., but as this is not a history book. I want to write about plot and character development. The characters in the 1838 story line were better drawn and more believable , but I am really getting tired of handsome, but not beautiful, educated spinsters and women with abusive husbands. The character of Everly in the modern section of the novel is such a millennial stereotype-- even her name-- and as a "boomer" I do find it offensive that every mother my age walks around with a drink in her hand as she yells at the people on the street. The one caveat of my generation's women-- we are all good at organizing dinners, luncheons, and birthday parties and apparently great cooks. Also, whenever water becomes a character-- I know, I know, this is a novel about the "Titanic of the South", but it also plays an important part in the modern section of the novel as Everly is a diver-- someone is going to go in it and come out of it newly baptized and reborn, ala THE THORN BIRDS or the movie "The Piano". There are no surprises or plot twists and both story lines were very predictable. The novel is a very easy, short read and something to do on a rainy afternoon.
