Strange New World: How Thinkers and Activists Redefined Identity and Sparked the Sexual Revolution by Carl R. Trueman
From Philosophy to Technology, Tracing the Origin of Identity Politics How did the world arrive at its current, disorienting state of identity politics, and how should the church respond? Historian Carl R. Trueman shows how influences ranging from traditional institutions to technology and pornography moved modern culture toward an era of “expressive individualism.” Investigating philosophies from the Romantics, Nietzsche, Marx, Wilde, Freud, and the New Left, he outlines the history of Western thought to the distinctly sexual direction of present-day identity politics and explains the modern implications of these ideas on religion, free speech, and personal identity. Outstanding book - substantial, relevant, accessible - a digest of sorts of Trueman’s longer “Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self.” Every Christian leader should read this work. The last chapter - which moves from understanding our times to “How do we the move forward?” is much more helpful than most. The audio version is read by Trueman himself. The following quote comes from that last chapter: “The era when Christians could disagree with the broader convictions of the secular world and yet still find themselves respected as decent members of society at large is coming to an end, if indeed it has not ended already. The truth is that the last vestiges of a social imaginary shaped by Christianity are rapidly vanishing, and many of us are even now living as strangers in a strange new world.”
