The Mirror Man: The most chilling must-read thriller of 2022 by Lars Kepler

IF YOU SEE HIS REFLECTION IT'S ALREADY TOO LATE . . . Five years ago, Jenny Lind was abducted on her way home from school. Now her lifeless body is found hanging in a playground. But there is no evidence and only one witness - a man who cannot remember what he saw. With Detective Joona Linna and the police scrambling to find a lead, another girl goes missing. And as they close in on the killer, they discover that the Mirror Man's crimes are more shocking than they ever could have imagined . . . From the 17 million copy global bestseller Lars Kepler comes the darkest, most chilling crime thriller of 2022 - perfect for fans of Jo Nesbo, Ragnar Jonasson, and Alex North's The Whisper Man . Praise for The Mirror Man : 'Chilling, nerve-shredding, clever, and impossibly dark' - CHRIS WHITAKER, bestselling author of We Begin at the End ' As dark and chilling as a Swedish winter' - GREGG HURWITZ ' Picture Hannibal Lecter sitting down to channel Stieg Larsson' - BRAD THOR Read more

As a classmate looks on, sixteen-year-old Jenny Lind is brutally abducted. It would be a spoiler – and not a happy one – to say much about where Jenny is taken. Suffice it to say that it’s hell in the depths of the Swedish forests, an inferno where Jenny and others will suffer unspeakable horrors. They have no idea where they are or why they are there. Two weeks later, professional couple Pamela and Martin Nordström are on holiday with Pamela’s much-cherished daughter Alice. But after an ice-fishing trip ends in disaster, Martin is plunged into mental collapse, and his behavior becomes increasingly disturbing. When he is caught near the scene of a hideous murder, the police are eager to pin it on him. It’s up to Joona Linna, now a detective in Sweden’s National Operations Unit, to find out both the truth about the murder and (the same thing) the points, often quite unexpected, where the novel’s different strands begin to intertwine. Followers of the series will find Joona in both a good and a bad place. After time in hiding, the loss of a wife after years of unwanted separation, and the death of another partner, he’s in a settled relationship with Valeria, former schoolfriend, gardener and recovered addict. But his actions in the previous novel, Lazarus, have alienated his daughter Lumi, who is now afraid that the father she idolized may be no more than a cold-blooded killer cop - and he is seriously considering leaving the force. As readers, we can’t help but hope this novel will bring some relief, however provisional, to this loving but strained family bond. Though I greatly enjoy and admire this series as a whole, it has strong entries and it has utterly stunning ones. For me The Mirror Man is firmly in the latter group, and the best Joona Linna novel since Stalker (fans will be pleased to note that the original “hypnotist”, Erik Maria Bark, puts in several appearances). If anything I would rate it higher than Stalker, and it may be the best in the series to date. It kept me guessing, while carrying me along relentlessly - for the first time in ages, I found I couldn’t put a book down. To say much more about the plot would be - well, criminal. I’ll only say here that as in the other books in the series, The Mirror Man’s real centre is psychological exploration of the most harrowing kind. The fallout from the murder embraces the private consulting-rooms and clinics of upmarket mental health specialists, the miseries of the walking wounded in the limbo of out-patient care, and the gaunt ruins of burned-out high-security “hospitals” of earlier times. The ghosts of older methods of treatment rub shoulders with their more recent descendants. On the police side, there are a couple of the set-piece police raids that Kepler does so well: a biker gang’s safe house is busted, an illegal waterfront club infiltrated under cover. Since the endgame is to take down the most chilling human nightmare Kepler has yet invented, the stakes are high every time. As a long-time consumer of crime fiction my grisliness threshold has always been elevated, but I have to admit that I still found parts of The Mirror Man tough going. Its sudden atrocities caught me off guard; at times I would catch myself thinking “Am I really reading this?” But the violence and cruelty isn’t gratuitous torture-porn. On the contrary, the abuse is suffused with a vile, bleak reality. It’s extreme, sure, but it’s also cold, arbitrary, casual - cruelty through the eyes of hopeless, helpless, victims. Each new scene of horror begins as if fiction won’t contain it, hinting somehow that the reader who enters it will never be free of it again. But these appalling moments are integral to the novel, most likely, I think, because the authors are deadly serious about them. The novel is in no way a roman a thèse, but the big concerns it touches on are clear well before the final “Note from the Author” spells them out. Any gripes? On this first reading I did feel, twice, that a plot revelation had not been fairly clued. Also - and this is just my opinion - the very end suggested a return to a storyline that the series has by now squeezed dry. But these are minuscule cavils. In the end, this taut, terrifying and atmospheric novel deserves the strongest recommendation I can give.
