On May 10, 2022 two outstanding books were published, A Sacred Oath by former Secretary of Defense, Mark Esper and Hearts Touched by Fire by David Gergen. Whenever Gergen speaks or writes he always impresses with his humility, common sense and fundamental integrity. For many years he addressed the scholars at the National War College--he always received rave reviews. I have known David Gergen for forty years. He has shown kindness to me on many occasions--he even sponsored a book party for me at the Watergate Hotel in Washington. Anyone looking for role models should focus their attention on Gergen and Esper. They should carefully read the books of these two distinguished American citizens and absorb their wisdom. In this superb book Gergen writes with clarity, tells some wonderful stories, and gives the reader lots of takeaways.
