Know up front that this sprawls- that there are a lot (a lot) of words at first- and then it settles down. Sort of. Know that everything will eventually connect. Alice loses her apartment and finds herself living in a basement with Roxy who works for the Mayor and dates people she meets, including Bob, on the Suitoronomy app. Bob has, to put it mildly, a problem. Alice's brother Bill is a tech millionaire who finds Buddhism; his wife Pitapat, is struggling with Crohn's disease and, ,well, Bill. Alice has decided to take the MCAT and is trying to study, with limited success, in part because of distractions from Roxy, whose life takes a serious left turn. This is very much about the impact of social media, artificial intelligence, finding yourself, and life in New York. There are some wonderful vignettes. To be honest, I struggled with the first 40 percent of this book, which felt a tad too frantic but then it becomes a more conventional, albeit unusual novel with a narrator (no spoilers) who pops in periodically.
